At least three people have died in a train crash in Missouri.

The passenger train with more than 240 people on board crashed into a dump truck at a level crossing near the small town of Mendon on Monday and derailed, according to the state railway company Amtrak.

Images published on online platforms showed several overturned wagons.

"There are numerous injuries and we can confirm three fatalities - two on the train and one in the dump truck," said a police spokesman.

The train was en route from Los Angeles to Chicago.

The first photos and videos on social media showed wagons tipped on their side next to the tracks.

Some of the passengers who were able to free themselves were sitting on the overturned wagons.

Just the day before, another Amtrak train in the state of California collided with a vehicle at a level crossing.

There were three dead in the accident.
