The Toyama Prefectural Tournament for "Wanpaku Sumo" by elementary school students was held for the first time in three years, and children competed for strength and skill with the aim of becoming a national tournament.

The Toyama Prefectural Tournament for "Wanpaku Sumo" by elementary school students was canceled last year due to the influence of the new corona, and this was the first time in three years since the infection situation had settled down.

At the sumo wrestling ground of Fukumitsu Tobu Elementary School in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, about 30 men and women from the 4th to 6th grades of elementary school gathered in the prefecture.

The tournament is divided into a men's section and a women's section for each grade, and the top four players advance to the national tournament.

In the effort, while cheers were rising from the audience seats, the children grabbed the mawashi and pushed out opponents with a larger physique than themselves, and competed for power and skill by competing at the edge of the ground.

A girl in the 4th grade of elementary school said, "I'm glad I won. There are many children who are shorter than me, so I devised a way to look at them. I want to do my best at the national competition."

The national tournament for "Wanpaku Sumo" will be held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo in October for boys and at the Urasoe Citizens' Sumo Stadium in Okinawa Prefecture in August for girls.
