If Martin Sheen has one regret in his life, it's changing his name to make a career out of it.

Indeed, the

Apocalypse Now

star had chosen to drop his birth name, Ramón Estévez, to facilitate his Hollywood rise.

“I never changed my name officially.

It's still Ramón Estévez on my birth certificate.

Same on my marriage license, my passport, my driver's license.

Sometimes you're convinced you don't have enough insight or even courage to stand up for what you believe in, and you pay for it later.

But, of course, I can only speak for myself,” the 81-year-old actor told

Closer Weekly

, before discussing his children's careers.

A brotherhood of actors

Of Martin Sheen's four children, all have chosen to pursue an acting career.

And as such, the Hollywood veteran is proud that most of them have chosen to keep their name, like the eldest Emilio Estévez.

“I was so involved in providing (for my family) that I was unaware of their desire to become actors.

The only influence I had on Emilio was that he kept his name, ”explained Martin Sheen about his son who had notably landed a role in

The Breakfast Club

.

But in the end, it is Charlie, the youngest, who will have left the biggest imprint on the screen, he who had chosen to take the name of Sheen.

And while Ramon and Renée Estévez's careers never took off, Emilio's is, so to speak, at a standstill despite a notable comeback behind the camera in the 2000s.
