What if your balance says a lot about your life expectancy?

According to a study published in the

British Journal of Sports Medicine

, relayed by the

Guardian

, people over 50 who cannot stand on one leg for more than ten seconds are almost twice as likely to die within ten years. who come.

This observational study published by an international group of experts therefore makes the link between lack of balance and health problems, with cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and dementia in the first place.

Balance problems appear with age

The researchers therefore recommend including a balance test in the routine health examinations of the elderly.

According to them, the balance begins to fail during the sixth decade of life.

1,702 people aged 51 to 75 participated in the study.

About 20% of them failed the test which offered three attempts.

Over the next year, 123 participants who had failed died.

In the end, scientists estimate that these balance problems are associated with an 84% increase in the risk of death within ten years.

However, this study has limitations, according to the researchers.

One of them is that all of the participants were white Brazilians.

In fact, the results may not be applicable to representatives of other ethnicities and nations.

But according to them, this test remains a relevant indicator of the level of health of patients aged over 50.

Now that you know, we'll let you take the test...
