Ekström began her career at Stockholm City Theater in 1966. She was awarded a Golden Bug in the category of best actress for her performance in "Jänken" in 1970.
Among her roles are also Miss Eternell in the TV series "Pip-Larssons" from 1998, and Kamrer Gunnarsson in the archipelago from 1979.
