Because of a forest fire near the small town of Treuenbrietzen in Brandenburg, the authorities ordered the evacuation of a district on Sunday.

All residents of Tiefenbrunnen are asked to leave their houses "immediately", the city administration said in Treuenbrietzen.

It's not an exercise.

The forest fire broke out on Friday.

It is fanned further and further by strong winds.

The local authorities had already started preparations for a temporary evacuation of the Tiefenbrunnen district on Saturday due to an expansion of the fire area.

They had referred to the "increasing smoke development".

Emergency accommodation in the Treuenbrietzen town hall has been prepared for the affected citizens.

On Sunday, the authorities also ordered an evacuation of the Frohnsdorf district.

This was announced by the city administration.

All residents should leave their homes "immediately" and go to emergency accommodation in the town hall of Treuenbrietzen, it said.

On Saturday evening, the authorities described the situation in the area south of Berlin as tense.

For Sunday, therefore, increasing wind was expected, which favors the fire together with the current heat.

Firefighting work is therefore supported from the air by helicopters that fetch and drop water from a nearby lake.

In 2018 there had already been a large forest fire in the area around Treuenbrietzen.

At that time, around 400 hectares of forest had been destroyed.

The flames raged for several days.

At that time, more than 500 people had to leave the villages of Frohnsdorf, Klausdorf and Tiefenbrunnen.

The current situation is made more difficult by the fact that many areas there are contaminated with old ammunition.

This only allows the emergency services to move along certain paths.

The area affected by the forest fire expanded on Sunday night.

"A helicopter surveyed the area.

About 100 to 110 hectares are now affected.

The fire has spread to the east/southeast," a fire department spokesman said on Sunday morning.

However, the intensity of the flames has decreased.

On Friday, a forest fire broke out on about 60 hectares, on Saturday it was still a good 40 hectares.

The federal highway 102 therefore marks a boundary line that is defended by the fire brigade.

The fire could not spread beyond the closed road.

The emergency services are worried about the weather forecast for Sunday afternoon.

"Gusts and wind could occur," said the spokesman.

Telekom said it wanted to use a mobile transmission mast to improve communication between the emergency services.
