• The Truffaut college, abandoned since 2013, is under construction to reopen in the second half of 2022, in the heart of Croix-Rousse.

  • It will house student residences, a youth hostel, a crèche, a bar-restaurant and a center entirely dedicated to comics.

  • The metropolis of Lyon and its partners wanted to create a "common and united" place to bring together the youth of the district and talents from elsewhere.

The imposing Truffaut college, opened in 1887, had been deprived of its students since 2013. Listed as a historical monument, ideally located on a pretty square in Croix-Rousse (Lyon 1), it will fortunately find the youth that animated it, by the end of 2022.

No classrooms for all that: on the initiative of the metropolis of Lyon, this heritage building is currently under construction for a radical transformation.

Beneath the dust and the good smells of fresh paint, the building, which will keep its stone staircases and its high wooden ceilings typical of canuts, will house a solidarity student residence (77 rooms rented 390 euros/month), a youth hostel, a bar-restaurant and a crèche.

Yasmine Bouagga, mayor of the 1st arrondissement, insists on the presence of a "plural room, which will be open to the inhabitants of the district, and to young people who come here to study, receive tutoring, or simply have fun", she says. .

"We have proposed to associations in the neighborhood to think about collective projects to bring this room to life, and these ideas will be subject to a participatory budget", specifies the elected official, who above all wants "a real common and united place".

A place for the Lyon BD Festival and authors in residence

The new Truffaut college will also house a center entirely dedicated to comics, a first in the city, which already has a rich history in the world of the ninth art.

Here you will find the offices of the Lyon BD Festival, a studio that can accommodate an author in residence for two weeks to six months, and a graphic mediation workshop for young talents.

Workspaces are provided for authors from the region and abroad, to offer a virtuous circle through creation, mediation and dissemination.

For Philippe Brocard, president of the Lyon BD Festival, this project is in line with Lyon's long tradition in terms of comics: "The Lyon BD Festival has become very important, when we started from very little , he recalls.

So, coming up with this project, where we can welcome authors all year round, is great!

According to him, this place will become "one of the biggest centers of comic book creation in Europe, between the presence of authors in residence, comic book lessons that we can give there, exchanges..."

Planned links between the different cultural establishments

Nathalie Perrin-Gilbert, deputy for Culture at the town hall of Lyon, adds: "I believe very much in this crossroads between the proximity of the district and the talents who will come from afar, and which will enrich each other", she says. .

The geographical location of the College is not trivial either: "It is halfway between the plateau of Croix-Rousse, where the festival was born, and the peninsula where it unfolds today, close to the Villa Gillet… This goes to show how meaningful this facility is: it will enable strong links to be created between these establishments”, adds the assistant.

Especially since the city of Lyon is “candidate to become a creative city of literature at Unesco, and these riches will support our candidacy.

Lyon wants to be, must be, a city open to creation, and these spaces will contribute to this.
