60 years have passed since the Pacific Ocean was crossed by a small yacht at the age of 23.

Kenichi Horie, an ocean adventurer, is the oldest person in the world at the age of 83 and has crossed the Pacific Ocean.

What supported the 69-day voyage?

83-year-old "in the middle of youth"

Kenichi Horie, an ocean adventurer who succeeded in crossing the Pacific Ocean alone without calling for the first time on a small yacht in 1962, and also succeeded in traveling around the world in 1974.

His first voyage 60 years ago was famous for his film adaptation of Alone Across the Pacific, and he has continued to make various voyages since then.

The 83-year-old challenge was to cross the Pacific Ocean on the reverse route of 60 years ago.

He left the United States in March and reached the goal of Kii Suido on June 4, 69 days later.

According to the supporting organizations, the oldest record, which was 72 years old, was set to 10 years old or older.

In the greeting after landing, he announced Horie Setsu, "I am in the middle of youth."

69-day meal is mainly curry

How did you eat during your 69-day trip?

I brought rice, canned food, and corn flakes to the yacht.

And 6 kinds, 60 servings of retort curry.

He always ate at sunrise.

(Mr. Horie)

"It would be nice if it could be eaten easily, not something like elaborate cooking, but something that should be packed in."

Is it curry from the morning?

"Eating curry in the morning warms my whole body, and I think I'll have a day."

When I asked if I was tired of it, I got a surprising answer.

"Even after landing, I've already eaten (curry)."

"I was born in 1938, before World War II, and have been through the war. I've been through times of food shortages, so when I first ate my mother's curry when I was a kid, I thought this would last a lifetime. It was delicious. "

After a long voyage, I asked him what he ate first.

"It's beer and fried chicken. It was delicious, haha."

Mr. Horie said he brought non-alcoholic beer to the voyage.

In addition to the taste of beer after a long absence, it was a special taste in the sense that it arrived safely and ate the cooked meal.

The inside of the ship of my partner "Mermaid No. 3"

This is the yacht I used this time, "Mermaid No. 3".

The total length is about 6 meters, which is more compact than I expected.

It was designed to be the same size as the first yacht 60 years ago.

Mr. Horie guided me to see the inside.

Things necessary for daily life such as toilets and kitchens are packed in a limited space.

I was wondering how to sleep in the compact ship, but there is a space from the cabin to the bottom of the ship where I can sleep.

There is a window on the pillow, and I wonder if I can see the starry sky.

(Mr. Horie)

"You can see the top of the mast.

It has a weather vane so you can tell which one the wind is coming from.

This window is small but valuable."

It was for voyage ...

The difference from 60 years ago ...

The biggest difference from the yacht 60 years ago is that it is equipped with the latest communication equipment.

On the first voyage, the only electronic device was the radio.

This is GPS.

You can see the latitude and longitude in real time.

Besides, satellite phones, amateur radios, and Wi-Fi.

Every day, I contacted my family and the staff who support the voyage.

Oh, aren't you alone in the Pacific Ocean?

"No, I just listen to the radio 60 years ago. Now I can talk anywhere."

"I'm prepared to know that I can't get in touch with anyone on my first voyage, and it's kind of easy. If I don't get in touch regularly this time, my family will be worried if I get late." ..

I heard the secret of health ...

Life in the ocean is wild.

The shampoo is pumped seawater.

When I was 83 years old, I heard the secret of this strength.

(Mr. Horie)

"It's basically that you don't drink and eat, but there's nothing else. I'm a person who doesn't train. I've never jogging, I've never been in a gym."

"I'm just living with my family, so the food is pretty accurate. I get angry when I wake up in the morning if I don't get up on time."

It seems that only eye drops and bandages were used in the medicine box that was loaded this time.

It is healing to steadily digest the distance

A lonely voyage of 360 degrees all sea.

When I asked him if he had the support and enjoyment of his heart, he got an unexpected answer.

What supports me during the voyage is the fact that I am moving forward step by step toward my goals.

(Mr. Horie)

"For example, a cup of coffee is delicious, but is it soothing?

The most soothing thing is the distance you sail on a yacht, and if there is a quota for the day, that is it. Steady digestion is healing. "

How about the starry sky?

"If you can't afford it, it won't look beautiful. If the yacht is doing well and you can see the beautiful night sky, it may be healed that you're glad you came. It's not so when you're up."

"The sea is beautiful, the stars are not beautiful, and even if the sea is rough, the purpose is to sail properly to turn over the rice. This is important."

Mr. Horie seems to feel the fear of yachting alone during a storm.

It is said that overcoming it is an experience one by one.

"I'm trembling in fear in the cabin and making it look like a little bird, but I'm getting used to it. The second time and the third time, I can see myself becoming stronger than before. You can see that you will become a strong self. "

“It's fun to challenge with goals”

The challenge after the age of 80 was taken with surprise.

However, Mr. Horie says that advancing with goals creates various stimuli in daily life and enriches life.

(Mr. Horie)

"There is a fact that magma as a challenger gradually accumulates."

"When magma accumulates, it's exciting to see and hear various things.

For example, when I read the newspaper, I got this kind of food, I think it could be used for the next voyage. It's fun. Is it? "

At a press conference after landing, Mr. Horie said, "I'm a young person, but I'm aiming for a late-comer."

Ask when the magma will accumulate next time.

"It will be some years later. Thank you for your cooperation."

"I'm 83 years old, but I'm going to be fine until I'm 100 years old. I want to burn out like Joe tomorrow."
