The Library of Secret Dreams

by Michiko Aoyama, published on May 17, 2022 by Éditions Nami.

His favorite quote:

“The value of a live performance is more in your own interpretation than in the power of its words”.

Why this book?

  • Because it's the first novel that inaugurates a new collection

    at Leduc: Nami.

Its objective: to explore the intimate through texts which depict the inner life of the characters, their joys and their sorrows.

Nami for "wave" in Japanese is "the symbol of the perpetual movement of life".

  • Because this novel takes place in Japan, where five characters will see their lives turned upside down by pushing the doors of a social center and going to the library there.

They all go there with a specific purpose and come across Sayuri Komachi, a librarian, hiding behind a partition.

She is an intriguing lady, with a gigantic face, who knows how to find the perfect book for each of them after asking a single question: "What are you looking for?"

  • Because among these characters, we have a young girl who wants to learn about computers to get the job she wants, a young man unbeatable on manga and who underestimates his talent as a designer or even a retiree who wonders what he will be able to do with his free days and who wants to learn the game of GO.

And there's Natsumi, the character who touched me the most.

She was put in the closet after her maternity leave.

She is overwhelmed by her daily life and the famous mental load.

  • Because thanks to this librarian, everyone can say to themselves that they are not useless and that they should not devalue themselves.

They all have the right to a little stroke of fate, saving and happy.

I appreciated this chance of encounters and new opportunities that can make everything evolve.

Then we discover that without knowing it, a small bond can unite some of them.

It is a novel full of serenity and benevolence.

If you liked "While the Coffee Is Still Hot", you may enjoy this novel just as much.
