A macabre series among the Guardians

These new deaths add to a macabre series that strikes the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Two weeks ago, the official Irna news agency announced that a commander of the Quds Force, the unit in charge of external operations within the Guardians, Colonel Ali Esmailzadeh, had died "in an accident at his home ".

On May 22, Colonel Sayyad Khodai, 50, of the Guards was shot and killed by two motorcyclists as he was returning home in the east of the Iranian capital.

He was hit with five bullets, according to state media.

A member of the Quds Force, he was "known" in Syria, a country at war where Iran is helping Bashar al-Assad's regime militarily, according to Iranian state television.

According to the New York Times, a "US intelligence official" said Israel told the United States that it was behind Sayyad Khodai's murder.

The members of this Iranian paramilitary force accused the "Zionists" of being behind this assassination and vowed revenge.

In official Iranian discourse, the term "Zionists" refers to Israelis, but sometimes also to countries and individuals who support the State of Israel.
