A patient infected with the virus that caused Canadian pop star Justin Bieber's facial paralysis said yesterday she was sad to see what Bieber was going through, but she was proud that he was making people aware of the disease.

"I saw his video and I'm not going to lie," Nicoya Riscorla told Reuters in a video interview from Marsayon, southwest England.

I cried heartily.

I never thought I would sympathize with someone I didn't know.”

Bieber, 28, revealed last Friday that he had been diagnosed with a virus that paralyzed half of his face and forced him to cancel upcoming concerts.

In a video posted on Instagram, he said that he had Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, which affected the nerves in his ear and face, and he was no longer able to close his right eye.

Riscorla said she developed the syndrome 20 months ago by the time her 11-week-old was admitted to hospital with a severe infection, and the grandfather she was caring for had to move to a nursing home.

"Personally, I think stress was a very big factor," said Riscorla, who is 28 and has three children. "It's gratifying that Bieber is spreading awareness, but it's also heartbreaking that he's going through this disease."
