At the beginning of August 2020, the two men, who are now 20 and 21 years old, raced in their sports vehicles at speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour over a country road in the Eifel.

The young man's car collided head-on with another car while overtaking in a bend.

An eight-year-old girl sitting in it suffered such serious injuries that she died a little later, the driver and passenger were seriously injured.

One of the two speeders was in the hospital for weeks as a result of the accident.

The two men were originally charged with murder and attempted murder.

In their pleadings, however, the public prosecutor's office then moved away from the murder charge and demanded a youth sentence of five years in each case.

The regional court on Thursday fell well short of this requirement and sentenced the younger man to three years and nine months and the older man to three years and six months in prison for intentionally participating in a motor vehicle race resulting in death.
