In the US, two new projects have been announced at once, which will be released as part of the popular Ghostbusters franchise: an animated film and a series, reports Variety.

Jason Reitman and Gil Keenan, who previously collaborated on the feature film Ghostbusters: Descendants, are working on both films.

The new feature will be directed by Chris Prynoski (Daria, Metalocalypse) and Jennifer Kluska (Monsters on Vacation: Transformation) and written by How I Met Your Mother's Brenda Hsu.

At the official Ghostbusters Day event, Jason Reitman revealed that the upcoming film will feature a fresh take on the mythology of the hunters.

“This project was my father's passion and the reason is easy to understand.

The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless reach of animation,” says the filmmaker.

It is known that the plot of the tape will be centered around new characters, but it is possible that old ones will appear in the episodes.

As Screen Rant notes, it is possible that new ghost hunters will become the heroes of the cartoon - or there will be no heroes like them at all, and other aspects of the world inhabited by ghosts will be revealed in the tape.

An animated series is being prepared for an online video service.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being, and a screenwriter has not been confirmed for this project.

Jason Reitman and Gil Keenan will serve as producers.

The Ghostbusters universe will also be expanded by the Ghostbusters VR Academy virtual reality simulator and the Dark Horse comic book series.

Their plot will merge the events of Reitman's Ghostbusters: Descendants with the story that will be told in the film's previously announced sequel.

The history of the Ghostbusters franchise began in the mid-1970s, when CBS released a comedy series of the same name for a children's audience.

His heroes are detectives investigating ghost-related crimes.

Six years later, in 1981, actor and screenwriter Dan Aykroyd, who had long been interested in the paranormal, read an article about quantum physics and parapsychology and decided to take a new approach to the development of films about ghosts.

In 1984, the premiere of the film "Ghostbusters" took place.

Aykroyd was one of the screenwriters of the project, and also played a central role.

Together with him, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver and Harold Ramis starred in the film.

The director was Ivan Reitman, who by that time had released the films "Meatballs" and "Reluctant Volunteers" with Murray and several other passing works.

The first feature-length "Ghostbusters" tells about professors of parapsychology involved in finding and catching ghosts.

The film became a box office hit - with a budget of $ 30 million, it earned $ 229 million and turned out to be one of the most profitable film projects of the year (only "Beverly Hills Cop" grossed even more).

The tape was liked by both critics and a wide audience, and in 1989 the second part of the story appeared.

Reitman directed again.

The main cast also remained unchanged.

The film was successful at the box office, but received not so many laudatory reviews.

In the 1990s, the franchise released animated series - The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters.

In 2021, the premiere of the feature film Ghostbusters: Descendants, a continuation of the 1980s films, took place.

This time it was the children of scientists who had to catch the ghosts.

The director was Jason Reitman, the son of the director of the first two films.

The audience warmly welcomed the project.

The audience noted the successful cast (the roles were played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace), a dynamic plot and numerous references to the original films.

In April 2022, a sequel to Jason Reitman's film was announced.

The popular franchise also includes Paul Feig's 2016 reboot of the original story, Ghostbusters, a host of PC games, themed rides and merchandise.
