Since 1950, fisheries and aquaculture production (capture fishing and aquatic farms) has increased ninefold according to the FAO.

For artisanal fishing, it is difficult to compete against industrial fishing fleets.
The overexploitation of halieutic resources combined with destructive fishing methods, such as trawling, seine fishing, fishing with explosives lead to a collapse in the number of fish, as does the phenomenon of "bycatch" (accidental catches of fish, generally discarded dead in the water) which would affect 7.3 million tonnes of fish per year.
These practices are also responsible for the degradation of marine habitats, degradation reinforced by climate change as the ocean captures 90% of solar energy and heats up rapidly.
