Matthew McConaughey gave his opinion on the debate surrounding gun control in the United States.

The actor, born in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two of their teachers died in a mass shooting, delivered his views in an editorial published by the Austin American-Statesman.

And unlike many of her Hollywood brothers and sisters, the star believes gun control is impossible and needs to be looked at differently.

“There is a difference between control and responsibility.

The first is a mandate that may infringe our rights;

the second is a duty which will preserve it.

There is no constitutional barrier to liability for firearms.

Keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people is not only the responsible thing to do, it's also the best way to protect the Second Amendment.

We can do both,” he wrote in his post.

Different law

Matthew McConaughey, who has never really revealed his political orientation, does in any case everything to avoid the proposals favored by the American Democrats, such as the outright banning of weapons such as the AR-15, the rifle of attack used by the 18-year-old teenager in Uvalde (and in many other fatal killings in recent months in the United States).

Among the options, for the actor: prohibit this type of weapon to young people under 21, except if they are in the army (and therefore know how to use it, according to him).

“I'm talking about the weapon of choice for mass killers, the AR-15.

The killer from Uvalde, my hometown, bought two AR-15s for his eighteenth birthday, just days before killing 19 students and two teachers.

He obeyed the law.

If the law had been different, I might not be writing this today, ”explains the man who once thought of running for governor of Texas.

“The current state of things is not working”

He also advocates background checks on every firearm buyer.

“Gun control activists call it a loophole.

I call it incompetence,” the star wrote.

Finally, he believes that it is necessary to impose, at the national level, a waiting period for each purchase of an assault rifle.

“Studies show that mandatory waiting periods have reduced homicides by 17%.

Firearm suicides account for the majority of firearm deaths in the United States.

A waiting period for the purchase of an assault rifle is an acceptable sacrifice for responsible gun owners when it can prevent femicide or mass shooting suicide,” he explained, pointing out that while these measures may not completely solve the problem, they could at least save many lives.

"The current state of things isn't working," concludes the
