An exceptional violin will be auctioned this Friday during a sale organized in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine) by the Aguttes house.

It is a Guarnerius, known as “del Gesù”, made in 1736 in Cremona (Italy), reports

The instrument is estimated between 4 and 4.5 million euros.

It previously belonged to Régis Pasquier, 76, musician elected soloist of the year in 1991. He acquired it more than 20 years ago and is parting with it to "pass the baton".

A Stradivarius competitor

The instrument was made by luthier Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarnerius, nicknamed "del Gesù", a contemporary and rival of Stradivarius.

This is the first sale in the 21st century of a Guarnerius from the intermediate period (between 1730 and 1740), when the luthier was at the peak of his art.

This violin will be priced at 2 or 2.5 million euros.
