Sultan Al Qasimi honors the winners of the “ICROM” and “Heritage for Young People” awards

Sharjah celebrates the protectors of Arab cultural heritage in the House of Wisdom

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, attended yesterday a ceremony honoring the winners of the third cycle of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region (2022-2021), and the second cycle of the Heritage Award The Arab Cultural for Young People, in the House of Wisdom.

During his speech at the start of the ceremony at the House of Wisdom, Dr. Zaki Aslan, Regional Director of ICCROM in Sharjah, thanked His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for his continuous support to the regional center and all cultural initiatives and programmes.

He said, "When we launched this award five years ago, our goal was to spread the culture of preserving cultural heritage in the region within international standards and foundations, by introducing good initiatives that are being implemented at the Arab level, and that contribute to stimulating the protection and revival of tangible cultural heritage in a way that amounts to Following international methodologies within the societal context and sustainable development, as we aspire to highlight and honor these initiatives in line with their excellence in the region and the world.”

The Regional Director of ICCROM in Sharjah thanked the judging committees that contributed to the success of the award by judging with all impartiality the nominated projects.

For his part, ICCROM Executive Board Chairman John Robbins said: “As we look forward to announcing the winners of the two competitions, I would like to express to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi the thanks and gratitude of ICCROM for sponsoring this event, and all our other activities in the region.” .

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and the attendees watched a number of visual films about the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region, the Arab Cultural Heritage Award for Young People, and about the winning works.

The ceremony also included speeches by a number of representatives of cultural organizations, winners and supervisors of the participations, during which they valued the support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi and his interest in cultural activities and initiatives that preserve the Arab cultural heritage in all countries of the Arab world.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah then honored the winners of the third session of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region, and the second session of the Arab Cultural Heritage Award for Adolescents.

The Grand Prize for the third cycle of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region was won by the Beirut Cultural Heritage Protection Project - Lebanon, and the Rehabilitation of Houses and Buildings Surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem - Palestine.

The project to protect Beirut’s cultural heritage was distinguished by its success in mobilizing the community participation of individuals and institutions, including civil society organizations, to participate in saving the urban fabric through many cultural spaces such as art galleries, museums, historical libraries, residential buildings and the special experiences and memories that these spaces carry.

As for the project to rehabilitate the houses and buildings surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem - Palestine, it had a positive impact on the families living in this area under constant threat from the occupation forces.

The project shows the strength of heritage and its contribution to giving hope, and the positive impact that it can plant in the face of the traumas suffered by multiple generations, and its participation in preserving family structures and linking people to their properties and lands.

In the Special Excellence category, four projects won: Hisham's Palace project in Jericho, the Baal Shamin temple project in Palmyra, the Qarara village project in Gaza, and the digital documentation project for historical documents in Jerusalem.

As for the second cycle of the Arab Cultural Heritage Award for Adolescents, the student Sarah Hassan Al Hosani, from the Al-Amal School for the Deaf in the UAE, and the student Al-Yasar Al-Masry, from the Omar Ibn Al-Khattab College School of the Makassed Islamic Charitable Association in Lebanon, won first place in partnership in the drawing category.

The student, Ghala Abdel Rahim Mahmoud Al-Raheel, from Bayouda Al-Sharqiya Mixed Secondary School in Jordan, won first place in the photography category, while the first place in the folk dance category, Al-Takadum School for Basic Education in Libya, won the old street dance, and Qasr Al-Hallabat Al-Gharbi Mixed Secondary School won first place in the Folk Dance category. In Jordan, first place in the awareness film category for the movie Farah from the Heart of the Badia.

The honoring ceremony was attended by Sheikh Salem bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler's Office, Sheikh Muhammad bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Head of the Department of Statistics and Community Development, Sheikha Al Yazia bint Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Youth Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, and a number of senior officials, ambassadors and representatives of organizations cultural.

Digitization and First Aid for the Documentary Heritage of the Manuscript Collection in the Omari Mosque Library in Gaza, Palestine, winner of the Grand Prize in the Collectibles and Collections Category within Cultural Institutions.
