A back-to-school season that already promises to be complicated.

15,000 bus drivers will miss the call to carry out the school bus next September.

The alarm signal is launched by the FNTV, the National Federation of Passenger Transport, reports BFM Business.

Currently, there are approximately 100,000 bus drivers who transport students from their homes to schools.

According to the sector, the situation is identical throughout the country.

“All regions are affected.

Ecore more school services will not be provided in 2022 compared to 2021 which was already complicated, ”explains Ingrid Mareschal, general delegate of the FNTV.

The problems are not new.

The number of drivers has been falling for ten years.

In 2021, there were already 10,000 drivers who could no longer provide school bus routes.

The health crisis has affected the sector

"The situation has become even more tense in 2020 with the Covid crisis with a 3.4% drop in the workforce," adds the manager.

Unlike other transport services, the school bus buses remained stationary during the confinements.

Drivers have therefore decided to leave their post, refusing partial unemployment, to try to reintegrate into another profession.

Some have retired without being replaced.

The job of bus driver is not very engaging for some.

Fixed on the school rhythm, the service is early in the morning and at the end of the day for approximately four hours of work daily.

This means that 40% of the contracts are part-time with rather low wages.

Hence the difficulty of recruiting.

The decree published on May 2, 2021 lowering the age of access to the D permit to 18 years may perhaps make it possible to recruit young candidates.
