Spain charges Shakira with 6 crimes

The Spanish government has accused international actress Shakira of embezzling 14.5 million euros from the Treasury, as well as tax evasion, according to the El Comercio journalist.

The Barcelona Court said in a statement, today, Thursday, that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute her as a result of the complaint filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office against her for 6 crimes against the Spanish public treasury.

Shakira paid 14.5 million euros, plus 3 million more in interest, after she was accused of committing alleged tax fraud between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira announced in a statement, following the Barcelona court's decision, that she would continue to defend her innocence in court with her legal team, and insisted that her conduct in tax matters had always been faultless.

Shakira stressed that the court did not enter to assess whether it had committed tax fraud and did not reject the arguments raised by the defence, but rather only summon the parties to submit their claims at a procedural moment other than the present, and that the rejection of the appeal is just another step in the process, which is now continuing in its usual course.
