Al-Azhar Sheikh: A Muslim is not free to marry his first wife

The Voice of Al-Azhar newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Sheikh of Al-Azhar in Egypt, published previous statements by the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, about marriage and the issue of polygamy. , Those who say that the origin in Islam is polygamy are mistaken, and the issue witnesses injustice to women and children in many cases.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb pointed out that polygamy is one of the things that has witnessed a distortion of the correct understanding of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnah, calling on Muslims to re-read the verse in which the issue of polygamy was mentioned in full, and to consider what preceded it and what followed.

He emphasized that a Muslim is not free to marry on his first wife, as this is a restricted license with restrictions and conditions, and polygamy is a right for the husband, but it is a “restricted right.”

Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb explained that justice is not left to experience, but merely the fear of unfairness or harm forbids polygamy, as the Qur’an says: “If you fear that you will not be just, then one.”

He stressed that he is not talking about the prohibition or prohibition of polygamy, “I do not call for legislation that abolishes a legitimate right, but I reject the abuse of the legitimate right and deviating from its purposes.”
