A team of researchers in China has developed a smart contact lens that can monitor intraocular pressure, and inject patients with glaucoma medication if necessary.

As part of the experiment, published in the scientific journal Nature, the study team from Sun Yat-Sen University in China tested the new contact lens on mice and rabbits.

Glaucoma disease means high pressure inside certain parts of the eye, which leads to damage to the optic nerve. Adjust intraocular pressure.

But the new contact lenses can continuously measure intraocular pressure while they are being worn, and when the pressure reaches a certain degree, they automatically empty the therapeutic drops across the retina septum, stabilizing the pressure immediately and avoiding any damage to the optic nerve.

The new lens consists of two glass layers between them, an air pocket connected to a microelectronic system, and when the pressure inside the eye rises, the air pocket in the lens is compressed so that the electronic system for injecting the drops is automatically activated.

The researchers confirm that the lens works wirelessly and without a battery, and can be used to treat a number of different eye diseases, according to the Medical Express website, which specializes in medical research.
