• Laurène Fernandez is one of the few students selected to present their film at the Cannes Film Festival, in the “Young Cinema” selection.

  • His short film called

Humans are stupid when they pile up

will be screened on the Croisette on Wednesday.

  • Combining documentary and fiction, it tells "the life of a building during the Covid".

A great gateway into the profession.

At 23, Laurène Fernandez will have the honor of participating in the Cannes Film Festival.

The young woman, who studies at the CinéFabrique in Lyon, was selected for the “Young Cinema” section, which features around twenty school films.

His short film

Humans Are Stupid When They Stack Up

will be screened on Wednesday May 25 at 11 a.m. in the Buñuel hall of the Palace.

It is a stop motion comedy, mixing animation and documentary, which deals with community life.

"I was inspired by

The Opinion of Animals

[British short film]", explains Laurène.

The director has chosen to integrate real interviews carried out in a building.

“I sought to have testimonies from people who adopted strange behavior during the Covid-19 epidemic.

I wanted to give the film a light, comic tone,” she explains.

But on the way, she doubts: “While doing the editing, I admit that for a week, I was lost.

I had the impression that what they were saying was not interesting.

“Using the everyday and simplicity to highlight the comic”

But it was by "listening to what people wanted to say" that the young director had the click and discovered the very subject of her film: telling "the life of a building".

"In the end, I used the uninteresting, the everyday, and the simplicity, to highlight the comedy", she specifies.

While waiting to know the opinions of the jury, the young woman savors the moment.

“It's a great chance to participate in the festival.

I see this as a collective event to represent the school and I'm happy with the visibility it can give them”, humbly explains the student who is trying to “stay focused”, aware of the path she still has to go.

“We will still have to work a lot to make other films,” she underlines.

The plans are there though.

The objective: to find new funding for his next production, which will again mix documentary and animation.

However, the director wishes this time “to go further in the process”.

And maybe, who knows, go up the steps of the Cannes Film Festival, but this time, without the student cap.
