The suspension of article 1 of the prefectural decree of March 17, including the indiscriminate slaughter of 170 ibexes in Bargy (Haute-Savoie) was recorded by the administrative court of Grenoble (Isère) on Tuesday.

The measure had been taken to fight against the circulation of brucellosis, explains

.

A total population of 370 animals

The decree authorized the slaughter of ibexes without knowing whether or not they were carriers of the bacterial disease.

The text had been attacked by various associations for the defense of the environment.

A petition bringing together more than 15,000 signatories had supported these activists.

The court decision was welcomed by the plaintiffs who said they were relieved.

Not all of the text was suspended, however.

Measures concerning capture, screening and euthanasia if the ibex is sick are still required.

Starting this year, at least 30 marked individuals will be captured and subjected to these tests.

The local ibex population is estimated at 370 animals.
