• On the Touche plateau not at my post, on Monday May 9, a report denounced the installation of “sleeping boxes” for students in the heart of the 17th arrondissement of Paris.

  • This project, whose construction is not finished, is led by École 42.

  • But the images used by TPMP are far from the expectations of the management, which wants to provide "temporary and accessible accommodation" to its students in precarious situations.

“A shame, it looks like a kennel”, “Inhuman”, “There is not even daylight”.

On the Touche plateau not at my post (TPMP), Monday, May 9, Cyril Hanouna's columnists were almost unanimous after the broadcast of a report on "cells or sleeping boxes" for students.

"Are you shocked, Kelly?"

“Launches the host to one of his columnists.

Affirming her indignation, the latter has every reason to display her anger.

In the report processed in just thirty seconds, the images show a sinister building leaving little light and little room for students who will be stacked and only separated by curtains.

At first glance, it is therefore easy to be taken aback, even appalled, by the images that have just been broadcast.

But the reality is still a long way off.

So what is really going on rue du Docteur-Paul-Brousse, the famous artery of the 17th arrondissement mentioned in the report?

FAKE OFF

If few details are given by the team of “Touche pas à mon poste”, the report mentions a cubic building, “whose external appearance is deplored by some”.

In a few clicks, on Google Street Views, it is easy to find the building in question.

Located at number 8, the May 2021 captures show several postings that mention "the construction of a dormitory building for the students of School 42".

The project is called “Noc42”, acronym for Not only a campus.

Its goal is to create “1,000 beds” for students to allow “temporary and affordable housing” for its students, explains the site of the school of developers created by Xavier Niel.

The mantra of 42?

“Free is still too expensive.

bad pictures

If the TPMP report estimates a price of “250 euros per month”, in the corridors of School 42, we blow that these prices have not yet been really fixed.

For good reason, the construction of the building is not yet finished, we explain internally.

The delivery of Noc42 was supposed to take place at the beginning of 2022, but has been delayed.

It is therefore difficult to know where the images broadcast by “Touche pas à mon poste” come from.

A few days earlier, on May 6 to be exact, the photographs had nevertheless been relayed by the Twitter account @geometre18, an Internet user who used to denounce “the ransacking in Paris”.

However, these images used by the channel and on social networks were not taken inside this new dormitory, as it is still under construction and therefore inaccessible to the public.

On the contrary, the synthetic images presented by the architects do not reflect the gloomy aspect of the report and rather show a luminous space, with delimited spaces.

Moreover, the school ensures that these cabin beds will offer “comfort and intimacy”.

"Reinventing the dormitory"

In reality, in the corridors of School 42, student precariousness is worrying.

“70% of students of students can be financially independent on average nine months after admission.

But during this period, the solution is to reinvent the dormitory, ”explains the establishment.

The school therefore insists on the “temporary” aspect of this new accommodation, which aims to respond to the student housing crisis currently hitting Paris.

"We have students from disadvantaged backgrounds who want to take part in training courses such as La Piscine [a one-month selection test for future students], but who cannot because of housing", points out Sophie Viger. , the general manager of École 42. A real obstacle to access to studies, the management of 42 therefore wanted to offer a solution to the most precarious students.

On average, 726 euros per month

According to a latest barometer published by Century 21, published in July, the average price of accommodation in the 17th arrondissement where École 42 is located is 726 euros on average for accommodation between 9 and 20 square meters.

This is far too much for the establishment, which also sees a practical side to offering proximity between the school and the student's accommodation.

As for the gaze of the mayor of Paris, questioned by the chroniclers, the project was one of the winners of "Reinventing Paris" in 2016, an international architectural competition organized and chosen by the City.

“Congratulations to NOC42, a project open to the neighborhood”, then greeted Anne Hidalgo on Twitter.

If the project is supported by the mayor of Paris, it remains entirely financed by École 42.
