After eleven days, the escape of a prisoner and a prison guard from Alabama, Indiana, has come to a tragic end.

In a wild chase, the police caught the couple in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, according to American media, citing the police.

The correctional officer who allegedly helped the convicted felon and murder suspect escape from Lauderdale County Jail in Alabama died in hospital from a serious gunshot wound.

The forces assume that the woman had fired the shot herself.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said Casey White, 38, and Vicky White, 56, were arrested Monday in Indiana after a chase.

Despite sharing the same last name, the two are not related.

However, Singleton had already described a romantic relationship as possible during the search, so the two Whites are said to have met in 2020.

75 years imprisonment and numerous crimes

“We took a dangerous man off the street today.

He will never see the light of day again," Singleton said of Casey White's arrest.

According to the sheriff, the fugitive should be brought back to Alabama, as reported by Fox News.

According to police, Casey White was serving a 75-year sentence for a wide range of crimes.

He was also charged with the murder of a 58-year-old woman and was awaiting trial in the Alabama jail.

During the pursuit, a task force from the US Marshals - investigators from the judiciary - rammed the vehicle of the two, Marshal Matt Keely reported to CNN.

The car overturned.

Rescuers pulled Casey White from the wreckage, but the woman was pinned down and had a gunshot wound to the head, Keely said.

Casey White called on officers to help his "wife," who shot herself in the head.

The emergency services had no information about a possible marriage.

The escape helper's motives are puzzling

As an escape helper, Vicky White faced up to ten years in prison.

She can no longer explain what made her elope with the convicted criminal and murder suspect.

Her death came as a shock to her colleagues in Lauderdale, Singleton said.

"She knew everyone.

She was like a mother.”

According to information from the Fox News broadcaster, the 56-year-old had worked in prison for almost 17 years, was once "Employee of the Year" and most recently even deputy director.

Shortly before fleeing, she had sold her house well below market value and announced that she wanted to retire.

On her last day of work, she claimed to be taking inmate White for a health check, so they both left the prison.

Escape was probably planned

Unlike most escape attempts by inmates, this escape appeared well planned, the sheriff said.

Vicky White used false identities and the two had switched vehicles in the meantime.

When she got out of jail with White, she had a change of clothes for him, surveillance footage showed.

According to the sheriff, a tip from the population led the emergency services to the couple after eleven days of a search.

Casey White had a $10,000 bounty on his head and Vicky White had a $5,000 bounty on his head.
