First poem by Aimé Césaire,

Cahier d'un retour au Pays Natal

recounts the French West Indies before the decline of the colonial empire in 1939. A text "

marked with the seal of his impatience as a young man of 25

", according to Jacques Martial who believes that “

the language of Aimé Césaire demands to be said as much as it is made to be heard.
