Masks for the general public.

Carrefour, Monoprix, Intermarché, Leclerc or Lidl… As of Monday, major retailers have put surgical or fabric masks on sale to protect against the coronavirus.

Faced with public demand, some sites are already saturated.

Where can I find surgical masks?

The brands Auchan, Aldi, Carrefour, Colruyt, Cora, Groupe Casino (which operates Monoprix, Franprix, Leader Price, Spar), Intermarché, Leclerc, Lidl, Netto, Supermarché Match and Système U have announced that they are selling their stock of masks at single use as well as fabric ones.

The conditions of sale are specific to each brand.

At Intermarché, no sale directly on the shelf for the 90 million masks intended for customers, in order to “organize responsible distribution” and thus avoid crowds.

If you have a loyalty card in this brand, you may have received an email asking you if you wish to “benefit [from] an offer at cost price”.

Interested customers then receive a single-use reservation voucher, allowing them to come and collect a box of 50 surgical masks from the reception of their point of sale.

Other Intermarché and Netto customers will be able to reserve these boxes of masks from Monday May 4 on the websites of these two brands, the same source adds.

Leclerc, who said he has already supplied around 100 stores with around 2 million masks, is expecting two more large deliveries this week.

“The masks will then have to be cleared.

They will be repackaged in pouches of 5, 10 or 50 masks “marketed at the rate of “probably (of) one package per customer at first”, indicated the brand.

On the side of the Carrefour brand, we want a “simple” distribution for customers, without an Internet reservation system or linked to the loyalty card, said Alexandre Bompard, CEO of Carrefour, on BFMTV.

The group “has secured” some “225 million masks” for the next few weeks, including 175 million of the “surgical” type and 50 million in textiles, said the boss.

From May 4, 10 million of them will be sold at the checkouts, he said, at a price of less than 60 euro cents for surgical masks and 1 to 3 euros for textile masks, in depending on their range.

Sold in sets of five or ten units, customers will be limited to purchasing two boxes.

At what price will they be sold?

The price of single-use surgical masks is capped at 95 euro cents per unit.

“Essentially they will be sold at cost price.

They should rather be sold around 60 euro cents,” said Secretary of State Agnès Pannier-Runacher.

Reusable washable masks will cost “between 2 and 3 euros, or between 10 and 30 cents per use”, she specified.

What to do if the site is saturated?

Don't panic: faced with huge consumer demand, some supermarkets have suspended their mask sales for the day.

It will therefore be necessary to try again the following days.

The offer should “rise in power” after May 11, indicated the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Federation of Commerce and Distribution.

From this date, all distribution brands should sell masks.
