• Health April accumulated more than 340,000 Covid cases and almost half in those over 60 years of age

  • Immunization Health delays the decision of the fourth anti-Covid dose to those over 80 years of age despite the rebound in figures

  • Figures Spain continues at "medium risk" with 813.22 positives per 100,000 inhabitants in those over 60 years of age

Asturias and Castilla y León

are the first communities to reach

high risk

, according to the Health traffic light.

There

are six regions at medium risk

: Galicia, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha Basque Country, Valencian Community and Murcia.

The circulation of the coronavirus in the population over 60 years of age has remained on the rise since the new way of monitoring the virus was established, from the end of March and throughout the month of April.

And this has led to

a 78% increase in the hospitalization rate in the last month

: from 7.20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at the beginning of April to 12.84 cases now.

Two key events have coincided in this period: the summer period of Easter and the 'end' of indoor masks.

It is true that it is at the end of March, according to the latest data shown by the Carlos III Health Institute with the old accounting,

the transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2 for the entire population was above 1 (1.02)

and on the rise.

Which indicates that if the new variants in circulation of the ómicron 'family', especially BA.2, have more contagion capacity, there are more infected.

BA.2

is the predominant one throughout the country

, with percentages in the different Autonomous Communities ranging between 70.5% and 100%.

So far, just over 1% of XE and BA.5 have been sequenced, other variants targeted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for being responsible for an increase in the number of cases in some South African countries.

According to the WHO,

Spain is among the European countries where the number of cases is growing.

After the increase observed during the first fortnight of March 2022, there has been a decrease of up to 22%.

This translates to just over 1.9 million new infections.

However, six states are responsible for this increase in figures with a growth of more than 20% in cases: Cyprus, 62%, and

Spain, 45%

.

As

our country has high vaccination rates

(92.6% of those over 12 years of age with two doses and 52.4% with the booster), greater circulation of the virus would not pose a danger if it does not translate into an increase in the care pressure.

In this case, there is a certain rise in the number of admissions.

The curve grows slowly.

Given that the focus of the Ministry of Carolina Darias and the communities is on the vulnerable population, it should be noted that the sentinel monitoring system of the Respiratory Infection Surveillance System warns of a significant increase in this group.

Thus, in the report of the last week,

a hospitalization rate for Covid-19 of 4.9 hospitalized cases per 100,000 inhabitants

is estimated , compared to 4.0 cases in the previous days.

This week the highest rates are observed

in people aged 80 or over: 49.3 cases compared to 27.9 in the previous week

.

Asturias and Castilla y León are the autonomies that have hospital pressure at high risk, with Covid bed occupancy percentages of 11.30% and 10.71%, and in the ICU of 3.16% and 8.43%, respectively. .

According to the latest report from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network, at the national level between the last two weeks of April (until April 24),

the weekly hospitalization rate has increased by 9%

.

This increase is statistically significant in the age groups from 10 to 19 years old and in the group from 50 to 59 years old, and in the communities of

Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid and Murcia.

Likewise, since March 28, 2022, the report shows that

the highest percentage of hospitalization among people aged 60 or over is observed in those between 80-89 (10.7%) and 90 and over (14, 1%)

, and in this last age group the highest lethality is observed (2%).

Give the fourth dose to those over 80 years of age to avoid further hospitalizations

While this epidemiological situation is being drawn in our country, Health and the communities have in 'waiting' mode the decision to give the second puncture to those over 80 years of age as recommended by Europe and already carried out by more than nine EU states, in addition to Canada, USA and Israel.

Moreover, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has emphasized the need to carry out this new immunization effort in this specific population because deaths could be avoided.

The European body explains that

the immediate administration of a second booster dose in this population would be optimal in situations of high

or growing viral circulation.

Alternatively, in situations of low viral circulation, the administration of a second booster dose before autumn 2022 should be considered.

Spain, with the current data, is in the first hypothesis

.

In fact, the ECDC mathematical model on which this argument is based suggests that increasing the number of people immunized with two doses and a first booster has been shown to be key to

reducing the burden of Covid-19 deaths until the end of October 2022

.

Scientific evidence suggests that the effectiveness of the vaccine against serious infections caused by omicron remains high, with strong protection continuing between 80-90% around two to three months after receiving the first booster, although

there are signs that protection declines slightly about three to four months later.

In Spain,

almost 4.1 million Spaniards over 70 years of age received the booster dose more than six months ago.

Which makes them, due to their own condition as a vulnerable organism, the easiest target for the new faces of SARS-CoV-2.

For this reason,

the ECDC model estimates that a second booster injection alone in people aged 80 years or older prevents up to seven deaths per 10,000 doses

.

This is because the severity of the Covid-19 disease increases considerably with age and the main benefit of vaccines is to reduce the impact of the disease.
