You may not know it, but the
Spider-Man
trilogy with Tobey Maguire should have been a quadrilogy.
It was in any case the desire of the director Sam Raimi who unfortunately had to abandon the idea of making this fourth opus because the scenario did not live up to his expectations.
“It was a very painful experience for me.
I wanted to finish on a high.
I didn't just want to make another [movie] that more or less works.
I had set the bar very high in my mind.
And I didn't think I'd be able to get a script to the level that I was originally hoping for,” he told
Rolling Stone
.
What if it was still possible?
Indeed, the filmmaker hoped to call on Bruce Campbell to play Mysterio and stage Kraven the hunter as the villain for this grand finale.
And whether he'd be ready to direct this film today, the
Evil Dead
creator has the same reservations he did back then.
“It would be the same things that stopped me then that would stop me now: does Tobey want to do it?
Is there an "emotional arc" around him?
Is there a good conflict for this character?
And is there a villain that matches the theme of the story?
“, he conceded.
So who knows, maybe Sam Raimi will one day have the chance to make a final
Spider-Man
that lives up to his expectations!
