The European Commission has explained that the level of extraction in the Doñana aquifers is not sustainable and the habitats that depend on wetlands are at

risk of further deterioration,

in a response to a question submitted by the Greens/EFA Group in Parliament European.

The question, as reported by EQUO in a note, referred to the intention of the Junta de Andalucía to increase the hectares of irrigated land in the Doñana area, as explained by the co-spokesperson for Verdes EQUO Andalucía, Mar González, who specified that The Commission has specified in its response that, according to the provisions of the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive, "any possibility of granting new water use rights is excluded".

The Commission has stated that compliance with the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union to which Verdes EQUO alluded in its question, and which has already condemned Spain for the uncontrolled extraction of water from the Doñana aquifer, "requires that effective measures be taken to remedy the causes of the deterioration of Doñana's natural habitats, in particular by improving the state of groundwater".

The Commission has concluded that it is supervising the execution of this judgment by Spain "and will not hesitate to take the necessary measures to ensure its execution, in accordance with the Treaties".

The co-spokesperson for Verdes EQUO Andalucía,

Manuel Pérez

, explained that a non-law proposal had already been presented in Congress "asking the Government to take action on the matter and guarantee the protection of Doñana, and we have shown that we are willing to take the situation to the European Parliament if the nonsense that the Government of the Junta intends to carry out is not remedied".

For her part, the co-spokesperson Mar González has declared that "in the face of the imminent electoral campaign, it is convenient to remember the attitude of the PP and Ciudadanos, who voted in favor of increasing the hectares of irrigated land, and that the PSOE abstained in a show of political cowardice seeking votes at any price".
