A ceremony in tribute to Eric Masson took place in Avignon (Vaucluse) this Thursday at the end of the day.

This 36-year-old police officer was shot dead on May 5, 2021 in the city center during a drug point check.

A year to the day after the events, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin and Marlène Schiappa, Minister in charge of Citizenship, made the trip to salute the memory of Eric Masson, reports La Provence.

The alleged perpetrator of the shootings in pre-trial detention

The two ministers were welcomed by the prefect of Vaucluse, Bertrand Gaume, in front of the police station.

They were also to inaugurate a dojo bearing the name of Eric Masson.

He had been shot dead during the control of two men at a drug sales point, recalls France 3 Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 20, were arrested four days later.

The youngest, alleged perpetrator of the shootings, was indicted for intentional homicide and attempted homicide on a person holding public authority.

He is now in pre-trial detention.
