Doctor Denis Mukwege was named Honorary Citizen of the City of Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) this Wednesday.

The doctor was awarded the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for the care provided to women victims of genital mutilation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The 67-year-old gynecologist also received the Sakharov Prize in 2014, awarded by the European Parliament to people working for freedom.

The Francophone Institute for Justice and Democracy Louis-Joinet organized the visit to Bayonne of Denis Mukwege.
