• The "nature plan" of the city of Lyon was presented this Tuesday morning.

  • The mayor, Grégor Doucet, has planned a budget of 141 million euros to revegetate the “most deficient” sectors in green spaces such as the 8th arrondissement or the peninsula.

  • If the WHO recommends having 10 m² of greenery per inhabitant, Lyon, with 5 m² is still far from the mark.

Under the 5,000 m² greenhouse, thousands of plants and flowers grow peacefully, capturing the rays of light that flood them.

Balsams, lantanas, petunias and even sages populate the paths by the hundreds.

In a few weeks, they will leave the horticultural center of Cibeins, where they are grown, to grow the beds or future gardens of the city of Lyon.

At the start of their mandate, the ecologists made no secret of one of their priorities: to massively vegetate the city.

“A major issue”, according to Mayor Grégory Doucet who presented his “nature plan” on Tuesday.

The municipality has planned to invest 141 million euros, which is the city's second budget.

“We have entered an era of global warming.

We know the importance of having access to a natural space less than ten minutes from home.

It's a question of health and well-being, ”explains the elected official.

Ten square meters of green space per capita recommended by WHO

The World Health Organization recommends for cities to have 10 m² of green space per inhabitant.

But in Lyon, we are quite far from the mark with 5 m² on average.

Sometimes much less.

“In the 8th arrondissement, we are below 2 m² per inhabitant”, underlines Grégory Doucet.

And to warn: “We will plant wherever possible.

This is evidenced by the recent work carried out in the Gorge-de-Loup district, where dozens of trees and clumps have been planted along rue Pierre Audry, thus redrawing the face of the sector.

This winter, 1,600 trees and 25 woodlots were rooted in the "most deficient" sectors in greenery, 23 squares and parks were "improved".

Without forgetting the urban orchards.

And that's just the beginning.

The stated objective: 100,000 trees planted by 2030.

A new park on the heights of the 5th arrondissement

“There is an expectation on the part of the inhabitants.

This can be seen in particular through the wishes that are formulated in the participatory budget.

There are a lot of requests to green a particular street or square", supports the mayor, confirming that the forecourt of the dance house as well as the two car parks adjoining the town hall of the 8th, "little used" according to him, will be transformed. in green spaces.

Another flagship project of the mandate, the construction of the Parc des Balmes on the heights of the hill of Fourvière.

“It will extend from the rise of Choulans to Vaise and could go as far as Tassin, reveals Nicolas Husson, deputy in charge of biodiversity and nature in the city.

It will be a question of connecting the already existing fragmented spaces but also of creating new ones.
