At the Gradignan remand center, near Bordeaux, the number of detainees incarcerated has long since exceeded the official figure for the number of places.

A latest official report published by the Ministry of Justice has even confirmed that this center is the most overcrowded in France with a cell occupancy rate of 222.3%.

It is at the top of the six French establishments whose density is greater than 200%, the following being those of Nîmes, Perpignan, Fontenay-le-Comte, Carcassonne and Foix, while 44 French prisons have a rate greater than 150%.

There are now more than 71,000 people incarcerated in French prisons, according to the latest published figures.

Of these, 1878 sleep on a mattress on the floor - arguably the highest number ever recorded.https://t.co/N5ivP8237X pic.twitter.com/nUZWlvd0ba

In total, 71,053 people were detained on April 1 in France, for 60,683 operational places, i.e. an overall density of 117.1% against 107.1% a year ago.

There are 6,000 more people in one year in French prisons, an increase which is reflected in particular in the number of people forced to sleep on mattresses on the floor, often in cells intended for one person and occupied by three prisoners.

Thus, there were 1,878 prisoners subject to these conditions regularly denounced by the International Observatory of Prisons, compared to 830 in this case on April 1, 2021. Among the detainees, 19,351 are defendants, imprisoned pending their trial.
