3,890 toads, salamanders, frogs and other types of batrachians were saved this year from collisions with cars in Gambais (Yvelines).

They owe their life to the Atena78 association, to the Regional Natural Park of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse and to the Horticultural Center for Education and Promotion (Chep).

The specialists have indeed deployed a device to protect them, says 78 Actu.

14 years of action

As every year for 14 years, a plastic barrier was installed at the edge of the road over a distance of 160 m.

The wall is equipped with buckets arranged every 5 m and into which the batrachians fall.

Volunteers collect the containers and place the animals they contain on the other side of the road.

The operation is repeated every morning for three months.

The flow of animals has now slowed down and specialists have had the satisfaction of recording a new record for the number of batrachians spared.

The previous one dated from 2020, with 3,086 individuals saved.
