A new species of carnivorous dinosaur fossil that seems to have lived until the dinosaurs became extinct was found in Argentina, South America, according to research conducted by the National Museum of Nature and Science.

The research group believes that it may have reigned at the top of the Southern Hemisphere ecosystem at that time because of its estimated total length of 9 meters.

International research groups such as the National Museum of Nature and Science have discovered fossil carnivorous dinosaurs in a stratum in Argentina that is believed to be approximately 70 to 66 million years old, and have found them to be new species due to their characteristics such as spine and ribs. , I named it "Mype Macrosolax" which means "big evil spirit".

It is a member of the dinosaur "Megaraptor" with large claws on its front legs, and is estimated to be over 9 meters long and weigh 5 tons.

South America at that time is thought to have been one of the largest continents in the Southern Hemisphere along with Australia and Antarctica, but because it was separated from the continent of the Northern Hemisphere by the sea, Tyrannosaurus, which prospered at about the same time, could not advance. Is believed to be.

For this reason, the research group says that "Maipu" was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs in the Southern Hemisphere at the time, and may have reigned at the top of the ecosystem.

Makoto Manabe, Deputy Director of the National Museum of Nature and Science, said, "It is thought that it was a species that contrasted with the tyrannosaurus that lived in the last days before the extinction of dinosaurs. I would like to continue my investigation."
