The development trend of reading for all is generally good

——A closer look at the results of the 19th National National Reading Survey

On April 23, the first National Reading Conference opened in Beijing.

On the afternoon of the same day, the China Press and Publication Research Institute released the results of the "19th National National Reading Survey". The survey has been carried out since 1999, such as the annual national reading "physical examination report", which comprehensively reflects the reading level of Chinese nationals.

Wei Yushan, the publisher of the survey results and president of the China Academy of Press and Publication, said: "From the analysis of various data this year, the development trend of national reading is generally positive. Except for newspapers and periodicals, the reading volume has declined. Other The indicators and data are both stable and rising, and it is very gratifying that the reading volume and reading rate of books have increased significantly." After the release of the survey results, the reporter interviewed Wei Yushan in detail to interpret the joys and worries of the national reading "physical examination report".

In 2021, the per capita reading volume of paper and e-books in adult citizens will increase

"This survey can be extended to my country's 1.322 billion population." At the release site, Wei Yushan first introduced the survey method of the "National National Reading Survey".

As a comprehensive, scientific and authoritative reading survey, in recent years, the survey has become an important focus of the annual "4.23 World Book Day".

It is understood that this survey will be launched in August 2021 for a period of four months. It will use online surveys and telephone surveys to collect samples in 162 cities, covering 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in my country. The survey is effective. The sample size is 42456.

Among them, the adult sample accounted for 74.5% of the total sample size, the sample of minors under the age of 18 accounted for 25.5% of the total sample size, and the urban-rural sample ratio was 3.3:1.

The survey found that many indicators of national reading in 2021 have improved: in 2021, the per capita paper book reading volume of Chinese adult nationals will be 4.76, higher than 4.70 in 2020, and the per capita e-book reading will be 3.30, a high 3.29 in 2020.

In 2021, the comprehensive reading rate of various media among Chinese adults will be 81.6%, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from 2020;

Judging from the above data, all indicators have increased by a few tenths of a percentage point. So, what does this seemingly "small" increase mean?

"Either 0.1 percentage points or 0.01 percentage points, these data may seem small, but due to the large population base in my country, in fact, every 0.1 percentage point increase means that the overall growth is very large." In response to the reporter's question, Wei Yushan interpreted the meaning behind the data. He said that at present, both the national reading volume and the reading rate have reached a relatively high level. Therefore, it will be very difficult to increase further.

In 2021, the reading rate of adult nationals in my country has reached 59.7%. This figure is generally around 60% in developed countries, and only some countries exceed 70%.

Wei Yushan said that another gratifying situation of this survey is that the reading situation of minors aged 0 to 17 is generally good, and the average daily time spent on reading has increased compared with previous years.

The survey shows that in 2021, the reading rate of minors between the ages of 0 and 17 in my country is 83.9%, an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 83.4% in 2020; the per capita reading of extracurricular books for teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 is the largest, at 13.10.

In addition, an analysis of the early reading behavior of parents and children found that in 2021, 73.2% of families with children aged 0 to 8 in my country usually have the habit of reading with their children, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from 2020.

The reading gap between urban and rural areas is obvious, and digital reading opportunities and challenges coexist

"In recent years, our per capita reading volume of paper books has been four or a few, and it is difficult to reach five." Wei Yushan said that although the current combined annual reading volume of paper and e-books has exceeded 8, However, there is still a gap between this number and developed countries. He introduced that the per capita annual reading volume of most developed countries is around 10 or higher.

The data is silent, but it can reflect the multiple levels of reality in the horizontal and vertical comparison. If you look closely at the "19th National Reading Survey of National People", there are many points that deserve attention.

The survey shows that whether it is paper reading or digital reading, the gap between urban and rural areas is relatively obvious.

In 2021, urban residents will read 5.58 paper books, while rural residents will read 3.76 paper books.

In terms of listening to books, in 2021, more than 30% of adult Chinese in my country will develop the habit of listening to books, but the listening rate of urban adults is 7.8 percentage points higher than that of rural adults.

Wei Yushan analyzed: "At present, it is very difficult to achieve such a reading rate in some rural areas in the central and western parts of my country, and it is very difficult to improve. This is also an important task for us to promote reading for all."

Reading in the digital age, choose paper books or e-books?

——This is a topic that is often discussed. This survey shows that in 2021, 45.6% of adult citizens tend to "read a paper book", an increase of 2.2 percentage points from 2020.

However, there is still a certain distance between the choice tendency and reality. Another set of data shows that in terms of media contact time, the average daily mobile phone contact time of adult citizens is the longest, at 101.12 minutes, compared with 21.05 minutes for traditional paper media.

"New media spreads quickly and widely, but it also brings shallow and short problems at the same time." Wei Yushan believes that various media resources are very rich now, but the more people who can really sink into long-form and in-depth reading Less and less, new media has the advantage of being time-sensitive and covering a wide range, but paper media, especially books, can reflect the depth and temperature of the content, "this is a dilemma."

In addition, "reading satisfaction" is also an indicator worth paying attention to. In 2021, only 28.2% of adult citizens expressed "satisfaction" with their personal reading situation, and 16.6% and 41.1% chose "dissatisfied" and "average".

In addition, 51.0% of the nationals considered their reading volume to be "average", and 35.5% of the nationals considered their reading volume to be "very small or relatively small".

Wei Yushan said that the reading survey showed the improvement direction and space of the national reading promotion work.
