Jacob was born in the Netherlands and his family moved to Wellington, New Zealand as a child.

He has been in China for 30 years, and he works as a teacher in Shanghai on weekdays.

Since the lockdown, he has been a volunteer in a community in Songjiang District for about three weeks.

In his opinion, volunteering is a great way to connect with people and to be part of the group.

He said, "Because I have lived in China for many years, I can now help our neighbors and the 2,500 people living in our garden. The epidemic came unexpectedly for Shanghai, and it gave me a chance to play in this country. Useful, I've lived here for years and can finally do something in return."

Although Jacob is a foreigner in this community, it does not prevent him from speaking to the residents about the control measures of the prevention zone in non-standard Mandarin: "Hello, we have a new card (pass), with this card, you can go to Outside, one can go alone, once a day."

Jacob said that recently, through volunteering, he got to know many residents of the community.

He said, "The virus is very dangerous, and I want to help the Chinese people." (Zheng Yingying, Xu Haoyu, Lu Yifan, Wang Jiayi)
