The oldest female gorilla in the world, Fatou, celebrated her 65th birthday at the Berlin Zoo.

"For her exceptionally old age, Fatou is a very sprightly old lady with a healthy appetite," said Christian Aust from the Berlin Zoo on Wednesday.

The animal came to the zoo at the age of about two years and is considered the oldest gorilla in the world.

For the senior citizen's birthday, there was a special rice cake decorated with quark, vegetables and fruit.

The female monkey only gets this once a year.

According to the zoo, gorillas are not allowed to eat too many “sweet treats”.

Fruit contains a lot of fructose, which is why vegetables are almost exclusively on the menu.

In addition to Fatou, 17-year-old Sango, the three female gorillas Djambala, Mpenzi, and Bibi, and one-year-old Tilla also live in the Berlin Zoo.

Western gorillas are said to be critically endangered in their natural habitat.

The destruction of habitat and hunting therefore ensure a severely decimated population.
