The death of a mountaineer at an altitude of 7400 meters

A Greek climber died Tuesday while descending the 8,170-meter summit of Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal, organizers of his trek announced.

Antonius Sikaris, 59, died a day after he posted a picture on Instagram showing him from the top of Mount Dhawlagiri, which is considered the seventh highest mountain in the world.

Sikaris felt ill as he descended from the summit and soon his health deteriorated.

"He died at an altitude of 7,400 metres," guide Mingma Sherpa told AFP.

Antonios Sikaris was an experienced climber who had previously reached five other peaks more than 8,000 meters high, according to his website.

The death of Sikaris is the first recorded death since the beginning of spring in the Himalayas, with a season that annually attracts hundreds of mountaineers to Nepal.

The Nepalese authorities had granted permits to climb 530 people for this season, including 204 permits to climb Mount Everest, which is the highest peak in the world.
