Tensions continue in the occupied West Bank.

Tuesday, April 12 was marked by violent incidents in the north of the territory between Israeli forces and Palestinian residents.

In Israel, a Palestinian who stabbed a policeman was shot dead.

For the fourth day in a row, the Israeli army deployed in the area of the Palestinian city of Jenin where two Palestinians who recently carried out attacks in Israel were from.

According to the official Palestinian agency Wafa, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition there and used sound grenades and tear gas during morning clashes with residents.

The Israeli army said in a statement that explosive devices were thrown at its troops who responded by opening fire.

A precarious calm returned during the day, noted AFP journalists.

To curb possible Israeli incursions, tires have been installed at the entrance to the Jenin refugee camp, where posters celebrate Palestinian assailant Raed Hazem who killed three Israelis in Tel Aviv last week.

"Here the factions (Palestinian armies) are united against a common enemy (Israel)," camp resident Ishmael told AFP, calling the Tel Aviv attack "heroic".

"The more operations Israel conducts, the more resistance it will face."

In all, 20 people were arrested on Tuesday across the West Bank, the army said, adding that it had reinforced its troops along the barrier separating this Palestinian territory from Israel.

>> Series of attacks in Israel: "Naftali Bennett's security response is worrying"

These military operations - concentrated in the northern West Bank - come after four attacks perpetrated in Israel since March 22, the first two by Israeli Arabs linked to the Islamic State (IS) organization and the last two by Palestinians from the Jenin area.

These attacks resulted in a total of 14 deaths.

During the same period, 15 Palestinians - including assailants - were killed in the violence, according to an AFP tally.

The latest was shot dead Tuesday morning after he stabbed and lightly injured an Israeli policeman in the southern coastal city of Ashkelon, law enforcement said.

The UN "is following with deep concern the escalation of violence"

"During an operation in Ashkelon, a policeman identified a suspicious man and began to carry out an identity check. But the man pulled out a knife and attacked the policeman who quickly responded by opening fire on him" , Israeli police said, adding that the assailant had been killed.

According to the police, he was from the city of Hebron in the southern West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 by the Israeli army.

On Sunday, Israeli security forces killed a Palestinian woman who stabbed a policeman in the center of this powder keg, where around 1,000 Jewish settlers live – illegally under international law – among 200,000 Palestinians.

Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Roudeina blamed Israel for the "escalation" of violence, citing daily military operations, arrests and "cold-blooded killings".

"We will not let our enemy put an end to our lives," Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Monday in Tel Aviv, at the scene of the deadly attack four days earlier.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres "is following with deep concern the escalation of violence," his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said on Monday.

"He is appalled by the high and growing number of casualties" and calls on the Israeli army to "exercise maximum restraint and use lethal force only as a last resort".
