Serious consequences of entering the house with shoes

In an article published by CNN, two specialists warned of the dangers of entering homes with shoes that are worn outside, and said that "what you drag under your shoes is the last thing that comes to your mind."

The two scientists who wrote the article are Mark Patrick Taylor, chief ecologist at the Environmental Protection Agency in Victoria, Australia, and Gabriel Filippelli, professor of earth sciences at Indiana University, who have spent about 10 years researching indoor pollutants.

The article notes that despite the controversy over entering the house with shoes or the necessity of taking them off, science tends to take off the shoes and “leave dirt outside the door.”

They found that about a third of pollutants from outside the home come either through the air or through the bottoms of shoes, and they found that some of the microorganisms found on shoes and floors are the pathogens of drug-resistant diseases, such as germs that come from hospitals and are difficult to treat.

The shoes also carry carcinogenic toxins, which come from asphalt road residues and chemicals in the lawn that disrupt the work of the endocrine glands.

In their previous studies, the two scientists measured levels of toxic metals (such as arsenic, cadmium and lead) inside homes in 35 countries, and found that many pollutants, the most important of which is lead, are odorless and colorless, so you may not know whether you are exposed to them or not.

And science says that there is a very strong relationship between lead in the home and yard soil, and what helps it enter the house is dirt from the yard, shoes or pets.

Regardless of the controversy on the subject, the two scientists say that it is easier to take your shoes off at the door.

"Leaving your shoes at the door leaves harmful pathogens in there too," the article says. "We all know prevention is much better than cure, and taking shoes off at the door is an essential and easy preventative activity for many of us."

If you need to wear foot support shoes indoors, only use indoor shoes but never outside the house.
