Marina Ovsjannikova, who previously worked on Russian state Channel 1, will report from both Russia and Ukraine.

- With her protest, she defended journalistic ethics, despite threats of state repression, says Die Welts responsible publisher Ulf Porschardt in a statement.

Sentenced to a fine

Marina Ovsjannikova made headlines when, during Channel 1's live broadcast, she held up a poster with the text "stop the war" as a protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

After the broadcast, Ovsjannikova was arrested and sentenced in a Russian court to a fine of 30,000 rubles for her action, which corresponds to approximately 2,700 Swedish kronor.
