"The Flesh Eater"... She underwent a weight loss operation and got a rare serious infection

A young Australian woman has contracted a rare and serious infection, after she underwent plastic surgery at a medical center.

Doctors advised Briana Mackintosh to undergo a tummy tuck, after she naturally lost nearly 50 kilograms of weight.

The Macintosh's condition worsened eight days after the surgery in which she removed a large amount of loose skin, as she developed an infection that caused inflammation and mold in the lower abdomen.

Sepsis can be a life-threatening condition when the body's response to infection damages its own tissues.

Doctors overseeing Macintosh's case confirmed that she suffers from an extremely rare condition sometimes referred to as "flesh-eating disease" or "necrotizing fasciitis".

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare disease, which is an infection of the deeper layers of the skin and under the tissues, and it spreads very quickly, causing death of the subcutaneous tissue.

And according to the British newspaper "Daily Mail", there was only one other documented case in the world of necrotizing fasciitis after an abdominoplasty.

To treat Macintosh, doctors at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne decided to push her into a coma and give her hyperbaric oxygen to slow down the necrotizing inflammation.

Although the health of the Macintosh is currently improving, it will remain subject to medical observation for months, especially as it will perform operations to remove dead tissue and inflammation caused by the infection.
