• A wish in favor of more autonomy was widely adopted this Friday by the regional council of Brittany.

  • The elected representatives ask for the opening of discussions with the State in order to gain autonomy, in particular fiscal and legislative.

  • Only the elected members of the National Rally did not wish to vote in favor of this wish.

A step towards independence?

We are not there yet.

On Friday, the regional council of Brittany, meeting in Rennes, spoke out in favor of greater autonomy, in particular legislative, regulatory and fiscal.

The region has issued an unprecedented wish asking for the opening of "discussions" with the State to gain autonomy.

"We are aware of the somewhat sulphurous nature of the notion of autonomy in French political grammar," admitted Aziliz Gouez, presenting the text for the autonomist group Breizh a-gleiz.

“Brittany is ready, mature to embark on this path of legislative, regulatory and fiscal autonomy,” she added.

All the political groups have come out in favor of this autonomy, except for the National Rally.

The deputy and regional councilor LR Marc Le Fur notably underlined that there already existed in Alsace "another labor law that is more protective of workers, another more protective social security".

“There are specific laws in France.

This opens up opportunities for us,” he said.

"If we go in this direction, we would ultimately be doing a great service to the state itself."

The wish is voted!

The Brittany Region officially requests the opening of a dialogue on autonomy: sharing of legislative and regulatory power.

Voted by an overwhelming majority by very diverse political leanings.

It's historic.

The vice-president of the regional council Michaël Quernez said "yes to this extra soul that is autonomy" for the majority group.

“This text gives strength to Brittany”, added the PS president of the region Loïg Chesnais-Girard, considering that it was necessary “to find an answer to this democratic fatigue which is there”.

In this wish, Brittany asks the next government and parliament "to begin discussions for the definition of a possible model of autonomy for Brittany, including a share of legislative and regulatory power" but also "a redefinition of budgetary relations between the Region and the State”.

The text also calls for a consultation on the reunification of Brittany with five departments including Loire-Atlantique.

The vote for this wish comes as the government has undertaken to open a discussion process in Corsica on a possible autonomous status for the island.
