This Thursday's meeting between

Pedro Sánchez

and

Alberto Núñez Feijóo

should mark the beginning of a new stage in the way of exercising government and opposition responsibilities in our country.

It is fair to applaud the prompt disposition of the new

popular

leader to reach State pacts with the Executive.

The precedents, however, do not invite optimism.

First, because of Sánchez's recalcitrant tendency to betray his commitments;

also by the very nature of the enc

uentro, for which Moncloa has not drawn up an agenda.

Lastly, and it is the basis for judging the success or failure of the appointment, because

a pact for governability between the PP and PSOE means that Sánchez gets rid of the radical influence of his partners

.

According to our poll this Thursday, the socialist voters themselves distrust Sánchez's intention to reach state agreements.

His disrepute is such that Feijóo should ask the president to validate in writing any pact they can reach.

Sánchez is preceded by his fame and Feijóo cannot join his game.

Just remember the promise

lower taxes

announced at the La Palma conference, which soon became a mere extension of measures already in force.

The economic one is precisely a chapter in which the

popular

must be inflexible.

The alleviation of fiscal pressure is essential in the current inflationary scenario, aggravated by the

war in ukraine

and the slow

post pandemic recovery

.

Feijóo cannot relent in his claim to achieve a deflation of the personal income tax rate that alleviates the tax burden of the Spanish.

The objective is still for Spain to join the European path of tax cuts, whose relevance is guaranteed by economies as powerful as the German or French.

Similarly, it would be unacceptable if the meeting between the two leaders did not result in a commitment to the renewal and depoliticization of the General Council of the Judiciary.

The Group of States against Corruption has described the system for selecting members of the CGPJ as a "critical issue", while criticizing the undoubted "politicization" of this body.

The maximum exponent of this drift is the state attorney general,

Dolores Delgado

, whose obscene and systematic servility towards his former Government dynamites the prestige of the institution;

to make matters worse, Moncloa rewards her with a promotion creating a law

ad hoc

so that Delgado is automatically a prosecutor of the Supreme Court after his unfortunate stage in the Prosecutor's Office.

Feijóo cannot give up sealing a binding pact to renew the CGPJ election system with the balanced intervention of judges and Parliament.

The leader of the opposition is presumed to have plenty of experience to proceed in such a way that, after taking the first step responsibly offering state pacts, he demands from Sánchez a symmetrical willingness to agree.

He must publicly commit him to dialogue on those matters on which economic prosperity and the preservation of the rule of law depend.

The opposite would be to give him a sterile photo.
