On April 6, the Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Li Jiachao, said in a meeting with the media that he had submitted a letter of resignation to the Chief Executive that afternoon, resigning as Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, and asked the Chief Executive to follow the Basic Law. Article 48, paragraph 5, recommends that the Central People's Government approve his resignation and remove him from the post of Chief Secretary for Administration.

Li Jiachao said that if his resignation is approved by the Central People's Government, he intends to prepare for the election of the next chief executive.

  It is reported that Li Jiachao is currently the Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, a member of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region National Security Committee, chairman of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Candidate Qualifications Review Committee, and former Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Security Bureau.
