• Madrid must support the honest and brave bet of Emilio de Justo

Emilio de Justo faces this Palm Sunday the 52nd solo bullfight in the history of the Las Ventas bullring.

De Justo will face his fate and a long history of triumphs, but also failures.

A unique gesture that requires unparalleled preparation.

Six bulls from different herds are waiting: Domingo Hernández, Pallarés, Parladé, Victoriano del Río, Victorino and Palha (these last two were rejected in the first instance while waiting for substitutes).

The last bullfighter to face six bulls in Madrid was

Antonio Ferrera

: with great success in 2019, (almost) saved by the bell in 2021 in the gift hat.

The bullfighter who has assumed this gesture the most times was

Antonio Bienvenida

, a total of six paseíllos.

The first time was in September of the year 47 in a bullfight for the benefit of the Montepío de Toreros in which he was going to have fought with Manolete.

After the tragic event in Linares, he decided to stay alone before the afternoon that ended with four ears and both the fans and his companions carried him on the shoulders to the

Sanatorium of Bullfighters

.

The last of the six was in 1966, the afternoon in which he would bid farewell to bullfighting with bulls from various herds and encastes, to which he cut three ears (later he reappeared in 1971).

That afternoon

the music band made the only exception of playing in Madrid while a bullfighter is face to face with the bull

.

In 1960 Gregorio Sánchez

managed to stab in an hour and twenty minutes the six leathery Barcial bulls -with an important triumph of seven ears-.

Same livestock with which Pablo Lozano was crowned, cutting four ears in July 1957. In 1970,

Paco Camino

would achieve the best record in bullfights of this style: 8 ears.

Giving an eternal bullfighting lesson for history.

An unquestionable reference of Emilio de Justo is

Joselito.

He fought on two occasions alone in Las Ventas but the one that has gone down in history was the Goyesca of May 2, 1996. A magnificent afternoon, full of variety, forceful thrusting and fighting understanding of each bull.

A select group of bullfighters announced themselves with the iron of

Victorino Martín

alone in Las Ventas with the aim of vindicating their career and consolidating themselves as masters: Andrés Vázquez, Ruiz Miguel, El Niño de la Capea, Roberto Domínguez, Manuel Caballero, Alejandro Talavante and El Cid.

All triumphed except for the last two, the most recent.

Little is remembered, although he had a lot of merit for his dedication in an afternoon totally against the style, the solo gesture of

Uceda Leal on May 2, 2004

when he achieved his second Puerta Grande.

Of honor was the gesture of Miguel Ángel Perera in 2008 in an afternoon to remember for his ability, for overcoming him.

Although numerically he counts on this afternoon as Puerta Grande, he had to retire to the infirmary where they operated on him for a very serious goring.

El Juli

cut off an ear -a poor balance for an undervalued afternoon, with the great work of Ana María Bohórquez's bull- in the six bulls he stocked in 2003 although a few years earlier, with expectations completely overwhelmed, he did the same as a bullfighter achieving a relevant triumph -first was ciolgar the "there are no tickets"- prior to the alternative in Nimes.

Precisely the bullfight of El Juli was a Bullfight of the Press as Luis Miguel Dominguín also did in 1949 -he cut off two ears-.

Twice Morante de la Puebla has faced six bulls alone in Las Ventas, in 2004 -without luck- and in 2007, giving a great afternoon especially in the last two bulls, with the mishap of the gap in the forehead of the one who he recovered to embroider the bullfight.

Antoñete cut off an ear in his umpteenth comeback in 1975. In the Charity of

1980, Paquirri immortalized 'Garcito' by Samuel

Flores, who was awarded the return to the ring.

Faena offered through television to his sons Francisco and Cayetano.

The strong request for the second ear was not heeded, but the right-hander from Zahara de los Atunes gave a great afternoon of bullfighting.

Very relevant was that of the teacher

Rafael Ortega

in 1954.

Regarding the frustrated

traps

in which no ears were cut off in the following: Antonio Bienvenida (1960), Curro Romero (1967), Luis Francisco Esplá (1992), Curro Vázquez (1994), Ortega Cano, Enrique Ponce (1992 ), Víctor Puerto (2000), Alejandro Talavante (2009 and 2013), Daniel Luque (2010), Miguel Abellán (2014), Iván Fandiño (2015) and El Cid (2015).

Emilio de Justo, who opened the Puerta Grande twice in 2021, assumes this gesture -signed as he has three afternoons in San Isidro- with the "intention and challenge of making history."
