A work by Pamplona-born painter Juan José Aquerreta, winner of the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 2001 and

the Prince of Viana Prize for Culture

in 2003, will announce this year's Sanfermines Bull Fair, as announced by Pamplona's Casa de Misericordia , owner of the town square.

The poster, presented this Monday at a press conference, shows in its upper part a photograph of the Pamplona bullring from

1922,

before the 1960 extension, and makes a direct allusion to the centenary of the Pamplona bullring that is being celebrated this year .

In the lower part there is a drawing of two women from Pamplona, one of whom has been injured in the running of the bulls and the other who is taking care of him, the artist explained.

These are two real people, cyclists, according to Aquerreta, who did not want to reveal their identities.

Both the photograph and

the drawing are dyed blood red

, a color she has highlighted that is charged with symbolism and mysticism.

Aquerreta has affirmed that his vision of the Sanfermines is influenced by his life in the house on Calle Estafeta where he was born and where he lived until he was 35 years old.

"I was impressed by the relationship and friendliness of the people and

the compassion that I felt towards the bullfighters

, the young men and people in general," she assured.

The painter has referred to the drawing in the lower part of his work and has underlined that there is "a very important psychological expression" between them.

For him, these two characters are "a symbol of San Fermín, of the city".

"Although blood is something tremendous, it is also something great. The color red means a great disposition upwards, towards God. I feel that it is a mystical vision if you will, but it is my vision," he declared.

José María Marco, president of the Casa Misericordia Bullfighting Commission, has indicated that this is the 62nd edition of the Bull Fair poster and has highlighted that this new work is

"a reason for joy for all"

, after "two years of suspension, sadness and silence".

This act of presentation, he has commented, "means meeting each other again and returning to normality".

Marco, who has asserted that

Aquerreta "is probably the most important artist that Navarre has produced in recent years"

, has shown the "deepest and most sincere gratitude" towards the painter and has pointed out that his work "represents a total and definitive increase " of the artistic heritage of the house.

For his part, Miguel Ángel Alonso del Val, a member of the board of the Casa de Misericordia and the architecture school, stated that for the institution this is "a very special year" due

to the centenary of the bullring

, which it is "one of the great anniversaries" of the city.

That centenary, he added, has wanted to be commemorated with an artist "who also becomes a benchmark for the city" and who in

this poster offers "an orderly

, calm composition, with symbolic and magical touches", which is characteristic of all his work.

At the top, he pointed out, appears the protagonist of the centenary and, below, "the deepest friendship and human relations" at the Pamplona festivities.

"The camaraderie, compassion and closeness," she specified.

The mayor of Pamplona, Enrique Maya, has asserted that this is "a very important moment" for the city, in which "this San Fermin liturgy is taking steps".

Regarding the Bull Fair, he has indicated the "

total and absolute importance that the fighting bull has in the San Fermín festivities

", to the point that "without a bull, there would be no San Fermines".

The mayor, as president of the Casa de Misericordia, has recognized that in the institution, without the income from the Bull Fair, "it goes very badly" and therefore "we have had two very bad years."

However, he has celebrated, "today, April 4,

we ascend one more rung of the ladder

".

"There is no turning back. If we already have a chupinazo, we have a poster for the Feria del Toro, I don't know what can happen, and it seems to me that we are going to take off even the masks indoors," declared the mayor.

Maya has highlighted that the suspension of Pamplona's festivities

for two years "has been terrible"

and therefore "we are going to enjoy these Sanfermines on the 22nd, the centenary of the bullring, like never before."
