The Paper reporter Jiang Ziwen intern Wu Xiaofan

Meng Wei, a doctoral student at Zhejiang University, whose Douyin account "Deliveryman who is studying a Ph.D." has recently become popular on the Internet, and his experience of postponing graduation and delivering food has caused heated discussions in public opinion.

After graduating from Zhejiang University in 2014, he entered the School of Control Science and Engineering as a direct Ph.D. student, and then entered the third year of his delayed graduation 8 years later, and made a living by delivering food. Meng Wei's experience has received sympathy and encouragement from the Internet. At the same time, it has also been questioned from all directions:

"Why did not have any scientific research results in undertaking 8 horizontal topics?" "Why did not publish a journal paper for 8 years as a Ph.D.?" "Is it difficult to graduate or hype marketing when choosing to be a food delivery rider?" The debate intensified.

In this regard, Meng Wei has responded in interviews with many media.

According to him, he is a 2014 doctoral student of Zhejiang University, graduated from the School of Control of Zhejiang University with a bachelor's degree, and minored in the intensive public management course of Zhu Kezhen College.

When faced with the choice between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the university's direct doctoral program, he chose to pursue a doctoral degree directly at the Institute of Intellectual Sensing, School of Control, under the tutelage of Professor Zhang Guangxin. Solve the current water quality abnormal diagnosis problem.

Meng Wei once revealed in a short video that he took on too many horizontal projects during his Ph.D. work, and the work unrelated to graduation caused him to be depressed, and his personal ability and energy were not enough to complete the doctoral dissertation independently.

After questioning, the mentor's arrangement with him gradually decreased.

Gradually, Meng Wei felt that he was marginalized, and even reduced to a "jobber".

Meng Wei said that he hopes that through his case, more people can pay attention to the group of doctoral students and the phenomenon that doctoral graduation is generally delayed. "After all, this problem falls on each of our students whose graduation has been postponed. Heavy pressure and burden."

On April 2, in an interview with The Paper (www.thepaper.cn), Meng Wei re-emphasized the purpose of his public voice: in addition to solving his own problems, he also wanted to draw attention to the problem of delayed graduation students.

In response to Meng Wei's public announcement on the online platform, Zhejiang University School of Control and Zhang Guangxin both responded.

In an interview with the Metropolitan Express, Zhejiang University School of Control said that recently, the leaders of the school and the mentor group have had many in-depth exchanges with Meng Wei, and provided humanistic care and help.

Meng Wei attributed the reason for the graduation to the fact that he participated in too many horizontal projects and not enough mentors and guidance was not objective, and he ignored many of his own problems.

Meng Wei hopes to continue his studies and obtain a doctorate degree after graduation. The college respects and understands this.

According to the college, studying for a doctoral degree is not an easy process, which requires focusing on scientific research goals, devoting the main energy to study, completing a doctoral dissertation, and meeting the doctoral application standards.

The college will actively provide support and assistance to Meng Wei in accordance with the relevant regulations of the school.

The college revealed that in 2018, Meng Wei’s research work was not focused and invested enough, and he never entered a good state of scientific research; at the same time, he became interested in entrepreneurship in the field of education and joined Hejun Business School.

In view of this, the mentor group suggested many times that he should transfer to a master's degree, but Meng Wei insisted on continuing to pursue his Ph.D., and wrote a letter of commitment on October 31, 2018, agreeing on scientific research investment, achievement condensation, and schedule arrangement.

In 2019, Meng Wei wrote and submitted two academic papers, which were rejected due to insufficient innovation and the need for additional data.

The mentor group has guided many times and proposed revisions, but Meng Wei has not yet completed the revision task.

In the later period, the mentor group persuaded him to transfer to a master's degree many times, but Meng Wei always refused.

The college pointed out that during the extension period, the mentor group maintained communication with Meng Wei, and Meng Wei also repeatedly formulated research plans, but the plans were difficult to implement.

The tutor group communicated with the parents many times, and the parents said that Meng Wei would not listen, and it worked.

The statement that "the focus and investment of scientific research work is insufficient, and it has not entered a good scientific research state" is also consistent with Zhang Guangxin's evaluation of Meng Wei.

In an interview with Poster News, Zhang Guangxin said that he embodied Meng Wei's scientific research tasks around 2016, but later found that his progress in scientific research was very slow.

During his studies, Meng Wei enthusiastically participated in many social work. At that time, Zhang Guangxin reminded him that social work and studies are two different things.

According to Zhang Guangxin, Meng Wei participated in international competitions many times at the undergraduate level, won many awards, and performed very positively; when he entered the doctoral level, especially since 2016, when he began to do scientific research tasks closely related to the thesis, slowly He found that it was difficult for him to go deep. In his own words, there were many goals and few implementations.

Zhang Guangxin said, "I personally think that the student's independent scientific research ability is insufficient. He has many interests and concerns, but not enough focus, investment, and depth in scientific research."

In response to the above-mentioned response of the Zhejiang University Control Institute, Meng Wei said that he would not argue about the right and wrong and the size of the responsibility.

He believes that "the disputes should be put aside at the moment, and I should be proactive in solving my problems." In addition, "I also want to draw attention to the common problem of students who have postponed graduation, so that things can develop in a positive direction."

As for the relevant person in charge of Zhejiang University School of Control previously mentioned, "Meng Wei's school subsidy was stopped according to regulations during the post-doctoral period, and the research team continued to issue post grants to him. After learning about his part-time delivery, he also issued a temporary subsidy." Regarding this matter, Meng Wei said, "I received two difficult subsidies this month, one from the tutor and the other from the college."

Regarding future plans, Meng Wei said that it has always been clear - to graduate first.

He wanted the help of an academic mentor to "give him a little more".

Meng Wei emphasized, "I believe that with my ability and accumulation, I will achieve results soon, and strive to get a doctorate as soon as possible and go to work." He mentioned that he will continue to work as a delivery driver during this period.
